Freestanding Luminaires

A freestanding light stands on the floor or on furniture and plugs into a wall socket, so it needs no installation. This category holds 176 products, floor lamps and table lamps, from 1 to 40 W with luminous flux from 80 to 2461 lm. E27 is the most common bulb base, and there are integrated LED, G9, E14, GU10 and GX 53 models too. They are made by TK Lighting, Zambelis and Thoro Lighting and suit a reading corner, a desk, a bedside table or a living room.

How to choose a freestanding light

Floor lamp or table lamp

A floor lamp stands on the floor, so it can go beside a sofa or armchair, or in a corner the ceiling light does not reach. A table lamp sits on a desk, chest of drawers or bedside table and lights a small area around it. Think about where the nearest socket is, because the cable should not run across a walkway. A floor lamp needs clear floor space and a steady base, while a table lamp needs a surface deep enough that it will not be knocked over.

Reading, working or mood light

Freestanding lights differ most in where they send the light. For reading, light should come from the side or over your shoulder, so a floor lamp with an adjustable head goes next to the armchair. A desk needs a directional beam aimed at the work surface, usually from the side opposite your writing hand. Uplighter floor lamps and table lamps with fabric or glass shades diffuse the light, which makes them better suited to evening light in a living room or bedroom.

Bulb, colour temperature and brightness

Most lights in this category take an E27 bulb, so the LED bulb you fit sets the colour and brightness. The rest have an integrated LED with output up to 2461 lm, usually at 3000K. For reading and relaxing 2700–3000K is the usual choice, and 4000K for a desk. Brightness can be changed on touch-controlled and step-dimming models: you touch the body or press a switch, with no separate dimmer on the wall.

Damp spots and materials

Most freestanding lights are IP20 and meant for dry rooms. The category also includes IP44, IP54 and IP65 models that can stand where there is some moisture or splashing, such as a covered terrace. Bodies are mostly steel, plastic, metal, glass or aluminium, in black, beige, white, gold and brown. A heavier base makes a floor lamp more stable, which matters in homes with children or pets.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a floor lamp and a table lamp?

A floor lamp is a tall freestanding light that stands on the floor, while a table lamp sits on a desk, chest of drawers or bedside table. A floor lamp usually lights a seating area or a corner, and a table lamp lights a work surface or the space by the bed. On led.lt each type has its own category.

What bulb does a floor lamp take?

Most lights in this category take an E27 bulb, the standard large screw base that fits most LED bulbs. The bulb you choose sets the colour and output, and the light’s manufacturer states the maximum wattage. Some models have an integrated LED and need no bulb at all.

Which colour temperature is best for reading?

For reading at home 2700–3000K warm white is generally recommended, while a desk used for longer focused work more often gets 4000K neutral white. With an E27 lamp you change the colour simply by changing the bulb; on integrated LED models it is listed on the product page, most often 3000K.

Can floor and table lamps be dimmed?

Yes, if the lamp has that feature. This category includes touch-controlled models, whose brightness changes when you touch the body, and step-dimming models. Neither needs a separate dimmer on the wall. Other lamps are either not dimmable or depend on the bulb.

Can I use a freestanding light on a terrace?

On a covered terrace or anywhere with some moisture, use only a freestanding light rated IP44, IP54 or IP65, and this category includes such models. Most freestanding lights are IP20 and meant for dry indoor rooms only.

Where should a reading floor lamp go?

A reading floor lamp usually stands beside an armchair or sofa, slightly behind the seat, so the light falls on the book from the side or over your shoulder. Models with an adjustable head that can be pointed down are the most practical. A socket should be close by so the cable does not cross a walkway.
