Pendant Luminaires

A pendant light hangs from the ceiling on a cord, chain or rod and concentrates light lower down, over a table, a kitchen island or the middle of a room. This category holds 699 products from 2 to 174 W, with luminous flux from 115 to 9357 lm, mostly with an integrated LED or an E27 socket and in 3000K, 4000K or 2700K. You will find single pendants, linear pendants and chandeliers by TK Lighting, Thoro Lighting and Zambelis. They suit dining rooms, kitchens, living rooms and stairwells.

How to choose a pendant light

How high to hang it

Over a dining table or kitchen island the bottom of the fitting is usually hung 70–90 cm above the tabletop, so the light lands on the table and the shade does not block the view of the people sitting there. Where people walk, for example in the middle of a living room or a hall, the pendant must hang high enough that nobody walks into it. Before ordering, measure from the ceiling to the tabletop and compare the result with the maximum cord or chain length on the product page.

Single, linear or chandelier

Match the shape of the light to the shape of the table. A round or square table usually takes one single pendant or a few identical ones side by side. A long rectangular table or island is lit more evenly by a linear pendant, which should be a little shorter than the table so its ends do not overhang the diners. A chandelier with several light points belongs in a spacious living room or a stairwell with a high ceiling, hanging over a walkway rather than a table.

E27 bulb or integrated LED

Most fittings here have an integrated LED, and a large share of the rest take an E27 bulb; G9, E14, GU10 and GX 53 are less common. Integrated models list their power, output and colour temperature. With an E27 fitting the bulb sets the light, so the same shade can take a warmer or brighter LED bulb. Where the bulb shows through a clear shade, a decorative filament bulb is the usual choice, while a closed shade only needs a frosted one.

Colour temperature and dimming

Dining areas usually get 2700–3000K warm white, while a kitchen island used for preparing food suits 3000–4000K. Most integrated LED pendants here are 3000K, with a good number at 4000K. Among dimmable models TRIAC (phase-cut) control is the most common, and there are also DALI, step-dimming and touch-controlled fittings. If you hang several pendants over one table, choose the same colour temperature and dimming method so a single dimmer can control them all.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a pendant light hang above a dining table?

The bottom of the pendant is usually hung 70–90 cm above the tabletop. Any lower and it blocks the view across the table; any higher and it lights the table less and may cause glare. Before buying, check that the cord or chain is long enough to reach that height from your ceiling.

What pendant light works over a long table?

A long table is usually lit by one linear pendant or a row of two or three identical single pendants. That spreads the light along the whole table and avoids dark ends. A linear pendant should be a little shorter than the table, and single pendants are best hung at equal spacing.

Which colour temperature is best for a dining room?

Warm white of 2700–3000K is generally recommended for dining: food and faces look natural, and it is easy on the eyes in the evening. Most fittings in this category are 3000K, and with E27 models you choose the colour yourself when buying the bulb.

Can pendant lights be dimmed?

Yes, if a dimming method is listed on the product page. Most dimmable pendants here use TRIAC (phase-cut) control, and there are also DALI, step-dimming and touch-controlled fittings. An E27 pendant can be dimmed when both the dimmer and the LED bulb you fit are dimmable.

What is the difference between a chandelier and a pendant light?

A chandelier is a type of pendant with several light points or shades, so it is usually larger and lights a wider space. A single pendant has one shade and typically hangs over a table or beside a bed. On led.lt chandeliers have their own category.

Can I hang a pendant light from a low ceiling?

Yes, as long as it hangs over a table or another spot where nobody walks. In walkways a pendant on a low ceiling gets in the way, so a ceiling light is the better choice there. Before buying, check whether the drop can be shortened to the length you need.
